[Surface treatment] Abrasive materials

24/12/2024

Abrasive materials play an indispensable role in the field of surface treatment. In addition to removing the burrs of the workpiece, additives can be added to achieve a polishing effect on the workpiece. Due to the diversity of appearance and different materials of today's workpieces, a variety of shapes and compositions have been extended to meet the final needs of customers.

Barrel grinding types and modes of action

Generally, barrel grinding methods are divided into four categories:

1. Rotation method 2. Vibration method 3. Rotation method 4. Centrifugal method

Here we use the "rotation method" to explain.

  1. Put the workpiece and grinding media into the barrel, and adjust the ratio of the two according to the required cutting effect; in addition, in order to ensure good rolling grinding of the two in the barrel, the total amount placed in the barrel is maintained at 1/2 ~ 2 /3, if the ratio exceeds the grinding force, the grinding force will be greatly reduced.
  2. In the initial grinding, you can use abrasive materials with higher coarseness and use slower rolling to have greater grinding force to remove minor defects and burrs on the surface.
  3. In the later stage, materials with finer thickness and polishing effect can be used for grinding, and additives can also be added to improve the grinding effect.
  4. Finally, use degreasing agent and water to clean it to prevent dirt after cutting from adhering to the surface or holes, and then bake it and you're done!

Types of abrasive materials

There are quite a lot of abrasive materials on the market today and they are widely used. Here we list a few commonly heard materials and explain them.

  • Copper balls    have good extension effects and have less impact on workpieces. They are suitable for physical paint stripping of hangers and other parts. They are simple to operate and environmentally friendly.
  • Walnut sand    is a plant-based abrasive made from walnut shells, which is the best abrasive for mirror polishing. It is suitable for sandblasting cleaning of power generation equipment, and the recycling of waste fuel is very environmentally friendly.
  • Aluminum alloy balls    have extremely high hardness and durability, and are suitable for deburring castings/die-casting parts made of aluminum alloys and other materials, and making them matte/matt to give them good performance.
  • Zinc balls    include atomized zinc balls and rounded zinc balls, which are suitable for surface treatment before matte/strengthening/corrosion removal/painting/electroplating of various materials such as zinc/aluminum/stainless steel.

Abrasive materials are very helpful for processing a large number of workpieces. With the assistance of barrels and tanks, the remaining scars and foreign matter from the previous processes (lathe and stamping, etc.) can be processed efficiently. As long as you can make good use of various types of abrasive materials, it will definitely help to improve the yield rate of workpieces.
