How much do we know about water? We often hear people talk about good and bad water quality, but people are confused about what is good and what is bad. Let us introduce some key points to judge the quality of water.

PH value

Generally, the pH of the water we use is about 7, but Taiwan's water range is between 6.0 and 8.5. If it exceeds the range, it is not suitable for tap water. For the pH value, we set 7 as the midpoint. The lower the value, the more acidic the water is. The lower limit is 0, while the higher the value, the more alkaline the water is. The upper limit is 14. The test method is to use a PH meter.
Most of the chemicals used by surface treatment companies have numerical values below 6 or above 9. Contact with the chemical liquid under such conditions will damage the skin. If you accidentally touch it, please wash it with plenty of water.

TDS    Total dissolved solids

When we visually observe the water quality, although it appears transparent and colorless, it does not represent the cleanliness of the water quality, mainly because there may be volatile and non-volatile solids such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and salts in it. When the TDS value is lower, it means that the water is relatively cleaner. When the value is higher, the water is less clean and may also appear turbid.

The TDS measurement method is to use a water quality testing pen, and its unit is parts per million (PPM) or milligrams per liter (mg/L).

According to information from the Taiwan Water Supply Company, when the value is below 600ppm, the water quality is good and suitable for drinking, but when the value is above 1200ppm, the water quality is poor and the drinking taste is obviously not good. We have also compiled a table corresponding to TDS and soft and hard water. The information is as follows for reference:

Regarding drinking water regulations, the drinking water regulations of Taiwan, the United States and Japan are all set below 500 for people's drinking water. If it is higher than 500, it will not only affect the sensitivity, but also cause a burden on the human body due to impurities in the water. We must pay attention to it.

EC Electrical conductivity

Conductivity is another method we use to determine water quality. It means the ability to conduct electric current in water. The conductivity is related to the total concentration, mobility, valence, relative concentration and water temperature of ions in the water. Generally, the higher the conductivity, the higher the electrolyte content in the water. Since most salts are ionizable, conductivity can also indicate the amount of total dissolved solids in the water.

The SI unit is S/m and the solution temperature is 25 °C. The commonly used unit of conductivity in industry is μS/cm, 106 μS/cm = 103 mS/cm = 1 S/cm, 1 μS/cm = 100 μS/m. The unit marked on some instruments is EC (electrical conductivity): 1 EC = 1 μS/cm[3]
