[Environment] What is the PFAS?

04/09/2024

PFAS stands for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in English, and its Chinese name is per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Among them, we hear substances such as PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate), and perfluorobutane sulfonate and its salts (PFBS), which are all classified under the general term PFAS; this substance is artificially synthesized As a result, products containing PFAS have properties such as high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. In addition, they cannot decompose in the natural environment, thus causing environmental pollution. PFAS has no immediate impact on human health. If it is attached to the surface of the product in the form of a coating, it may affect health after long-term use.

Products related to PFAS

The functions of PFAS substances used in products are mainly for oil-proof, waterproof, high-temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and other functions. Therefore, they are commonly used as coatings on many products to achieve waterproof, anti-fouling, flame-retardant and other effects; therefore, as long as If a product can achieve the above-mentioned performance, there may be concerns about the use of PFAS.

The harm of PFAS to the human body

PFAS has an impact on human health and ecology. This substance cannot be decomposed and processed. How to use it properly or find alternative substances is an important issue at present. The Toxic and Chemical Substances of Concern Management Act, which already controls PFAS substances, has listed four PFAS substances: PFOA, PFOS, LPOS, POSF, and PFHxS, and has been included in the control.
